In between Bangkapi and Minburi, on the east side of Bangkok, you'll find a series of quiet lakes, the Sammakon Lakes. These waters are dotted with restaurants and pubs - all recommended for good food and quiet atmosphere.
Food Quality
The food at all of these restaurants is excellent. Most of the menus are made up of traditional Thai dishes. Fish and seafood, baby crabs, and prawns are abundant. Spicy dishes range from laarb to tum yum goong. I especially enjoyed the spicy green curry rice at the "Hot Chili Pub." Delicious.
Atmosphere
That's the best part of this area. The peaceful atmosphere of the lakes, the lights shimmering on the water, and the distant splash of the fountains. Very few dining spots are quiet in Bangkok. This is a rare treat.
Prices
Moderate prices (not cheap, and a bit expensive for Bangkok). Most dishes range from 120 to 150 baht. A group of 4 can have a big meal, along with appetizers and drinks for about 1000 baht. Very affordable, even if it's not cheap.
See 180 Wide screen dining
The first lake (at sub-soi 22, see photo above) has just 2 restaurants, and the one I tried was called "See 180." This lake is the quietest, especially after dark. The restaurant doesn't have cushioned chairs (all the others do), but it is the quietest and has a nice menu. It's in the photo above as well as these two below.
At Lake 2, I've dined at:
Ruan Rot
The most upscale and most popular of the restaurants.
Hot Chili Pub
Very good cuisine, but they do start live music at 8pm. Even though it was light music, I would prefer to just hear the quiet water fountains on the lake.
Rabiang Chainam
The coziest of the restaurants on this side of the lake. I like this place a lot. No music, just quiet dining and comfortable seating. (see photo below)
Rabiang Chainam Restaurant, along soi 26 at Ram 110
(you can see Krua Tee Sorng across the lake - other side)
Krua Tee Sorng
Across, on the other side of the lake is one restaurant. It has a good view of the other restaurants, and thus a better view of the lights on the water. Its website: kruateesong has a map and more information.
There are many more restaurants along the lakes. I have only tried a few. Go early around 5:30 pm and explore, choose one, and watch the sun set on the water. Then enjoy drinks at night and the lights on the lake.
Note: Coffee shops line the other side of the street, and many are worth trying. A few have waffles and cakes, and all of them have pretty good coffee. The prices are reasonable, and the setting is nice. Several even have a distant view of the water.
There are also running trails and bike trails around the third and fourth lakes. (Boats are docked at the fourth lake, but I am unsure if any public boating happens there.)
Try this area for a change of pace; leave the hustle of Bangkok for a quieter evening out. The dining at Ramkamhaeng 110, Sammakon Lakes, will leave you satisfied.
