KL Bird Park: Fun Kuala Lumpur Guide

Kuala Lumpur has one of the most extensive bird parks in the world. Nestled in the scenic Kuala Lumpur Gardens, the KL Bird Park was opened in 1991. Since then, it has grown and become a major bird sanctuary, covering more than 21 acres of green land. It is the world's largest free-flight walk-in aviary, and houses rare bird species from all over the globe. Southeast Asia has the perfect tropical weather for most birds, so it's a great location for such a project. The birds are housed, protected and fed in a truly natural environment with plenty of space for flight.

For tourists, the KL Bird Park entrance fee is about $9.00 (30 Malaysian Ringit) per person. This may seem expensive, but remember you are helping the bird sanctuary as well. This is not like a trip to the top of Petronas Towers; but instead it's a combination educational visit and bird park donation. The KL Bird Park is open from the hours of 10 am until 5pm every day.

Personal contact with many of the rare birds is possible,

especially with the parrot species. You walk into the garden aviary where the birds fly freely around you in a wide open spaces. Waterfalls and ponds, along with green tropical foliage, help make it a natural setting for these beautiful birds. It's possible to hand feed some of the birds. There is also a "feathered friends photo booth" where you can get photos taken while holding some of their tamest birds, including toucans, giant macaws, lorikeets and cockatoos in a variety of setting and backgrounds. Cost of the professional photos ranges from $5 to $10 depending on the set you choose, or you can use yourown camera. This area is open longer until 6:00 pm.

The Waterfall Aviary is perhaps the most stunning area of the park. Lush vegetation surrounds a beautiful 30 foot waterfall. Rare endangered storks are kept here, along with a variety of other water fowl. Hornbill Park is the most famous section, housing 10 story evergreen trees and the rare giant Rhinoceros hornbill, along with the Orient Pied hornbill. These are among the rarest of all birds, and right at home in the Malaysian tropics.
There is also a 350-seat open air Amphitheater with fun shows daily. A variety of parrots perform tricks and antics worth seeing, especially for kids. You should find it entertaining, especially if you like watching birds have fun. The show I watched was just half an hour.

Birthdays and Weddings at the KL Bird Park.
You can host your special event at the park, including birthdays. Reserve at least a month in advance, and you can have a special party in a reserved section with cake and... birds. You'll also get a special guided tour. Prices depend on your event.

No ATM's in the park, so take your cash. There were no ATM machines in the entire park, so make sure you have cash in hand for souvenirs or drinks. There are plenty of ATM machines in the streets and areas just near the park.

Location and Getting There
Getting to the KL Bird Park is very easy from any location within Kuala Lumpur. Buses will take you there from KL Sentral every hour, or the KTM Commuter Train will take you within walking distance. It just takes 10 minutes to walk from the National Museum (and it's near the Butterfly Park).
Plan for a whole afternoon, and you will enjoy a step away from the concrete city, into a beautiful green bird jungle.
